“financial suicide”: this should be the first (though not the only) thing academics should say to students who ask whether they should do a PhD in the humanities or social sciences. total loss of earning potential in 20s-early 30s, plus X years of subpar pay & costly moves.

approaching people for interviews
Hi all, I need some advice on research. I am working on a research project for my dissertation and was told by my supervisor that I would need to approach participants myself. I had identified those who I wanted to interview and written to one person whom I thought would be interesting. I explained the project and highlighted why I am interested in talking to them. I also said that they could say no and that is absolutely fine. However, it went totally worse than I could have expected and I was blocked without so much as a word. Obviously, it is the first person I approached so I was quite nervous anyway, but it was upsetting. I don’t know what I said wrong or if they didn’t want to take part why they couldn’t have just said no. I have checked online and I believe I have been ethical in my approach and I didn’t say anything wrong but now I’m worried that maybe this person is offended and may complain to university. I don’t know, but I’m really frightened to ask anybody else after this experience. It sounds silly but I feel really bad about it. ? Online university courses
Hi, I'm not sure this is the right sub for this, but I'll give it a try. I'm thinking of enrolling in an course or two online. Not MOOCs, but an actual course with live sessions and assignments, something that can motivate me to study. This is not as part of an entire degree for me, just for my personal interest. Most of the ones I found are not in the fields I'm interested in, namely Philosophy and PoliSci. Coursersa and Udemy have a few similar things, but the lectures there are pre-recorded, and it's just not the same. Any suggestions/advice? I tried using ChatGPT to find journal articles on a topic... it made them up!
Real authors, real journals, and real topics (and a realistic sounding summary)... just not actual sources! That is scarier than anything else. I tried to use as a simple tool for a relatively mundane purpose and got the least ethical result (twice). If academics use this tool, are we really going to have to check sources as reviewers? Wtf. What is the future of academic/laboratory science research in the US?
Hello - This question is directed towards advisers and anyone involved in research (academic, government, remote etc): A lot of people are woking remotely these days. And of course automation is starting to disrupt things I have a few questions as I navigate a possible career change Does anyone know if/how remote work is going to affect science research (specifically, biology) carried out at universities and governments? Is remote research becoming more common than lab research and what are the biggest differences (aside from physical experiments). Also, if anyone knows: how has research in the biological sciences changed/evolved (for better or worse) since 2013? Thank you Submitted February 28, 2023 at 10:17AM by schnjac91 via reddit https://ift.tt/YIn4K9p
I've had a bad start to my honours degree and I'm feeling pretty down
I've just started my undergraduate honours degree in ecology after finishing my bachelor degree in November (I'm Australian if that's important for context, I'm not sure how widespread undergraduate honours degrees are in the rest of the world). Most of my study is to be conducted in the lab, but there is a small component of fieldwork where I will need to collect samples. This is the first official week of the honours program, and I need to have several pieces of paperwork submitted at the end of the week. One of these is the risk assessment for fieldwork. I will have no problem submitting this on time, but I've only just realised that I need to allow six weeks for the fieldwork forms to be approved. This poses a major issue, as in six weeks' time, I probably won't be able to find the insect in the field as the warmer months come to an end, and the suppliers I can purchase it from probably won't be selling it anymore. I've raised this issue with my supervisor, who has said that I may need to delay the commencement of my study until next summer, when the insect becomes active again. This feels absolutely gutting. I'm in the first week of my honours program and I've already had such a major setback. Perhaps I should have gotten around to the fieldwork forms before the official start of the program, but it didn't even cross my mind during the summer break. Between work commitments and trying to relax after a really difficult 2022, I had deliberately decided to not do much work on the degree until its official commencement. What makes this even worse is that the species in question is readily available in a local park near me, but purely due to administrative delays, I am not allowed to do fieldwork of any kind before the forms are approved, even if all that it consists of is a walk to the park. Now, I'm feeling pretty incompetent and worrying that my supervisor thinks the same about me. Anyway, that's my rant. I just needed to let some of that out. Is it plagiarism to use ChatGPT as a proof reader?
Is it plagiarism to use ChatGPT to verify the logic behind something you’re writing, or to point out potential flaws in your inputs? To clarify, it’s not being used to write anything for me, nor am I using its ideas as my own. Essentially, I’m just using it as a proof reader. Summer research opportunities
I'm a master's student studying human-computer interaction in the US. After finishing my master's program, I would pursue a PhD since I want to work in academia. I'm in my second semester, and the majority of my classmates are looking for internships in the fields of product design, user experience design, ui design, etc. I am aware that there are research-intensive internships available in the IT industry, but after a recent interview, I feel I am not competitive enough to be considered, as the majority of them clearly demand applicants to be enrolled in a PhD program. I was interested in learning whether there were any summer research opportunities that would assist me to succeed as a PhD candidate going forward. Is there anything similar to REU but for grad students? Submitted February 28, 2023 at 06:17AM by WeeklyDig9526 via reddit https://ift.tt/uRfN6m5
Tips on writing an extension statement for a faculty position
I am applying to a faculty position at a land-grant university. The required documents include a CV, cover letter, 2-3 page research statement, 2-3 page extension statement, 1 page diversity statement, reprints and references. I cannot find any examples of extension statements online and am wondering how to even begin writing this. Does anyone have experience writing one, or tips on how to structure it?
