I did a two year postdoc after completing my PhD in 2015, and this Fall (2017) I started a second postdoc. Before starting I interviewed with a financial institution and now I suddenly have an offer to start in January. I have also decided that I do want to leave academia.
In September I signed the postdoc offer letter. This letter was very informal but it was a 1-year agreement (renewable for a second year). My postdoc adviser likes me and I don't think he will stop me from leaving (although it will be painful to tell him). Should I have any problems at all with quitting and breaching this informal contract I signed? The offer letter says nothing about leaving/quitting. [If it matters: I have no teaching duties, I am an international student, and my salary is coming from my adviser's NSF grant].
