Neuropharmacology or computational neuroscience - advice needed for a 1st-year student.
Hi all, It seems I'm really stuck with deciding my modules next year. I'm currently a first year neuro student and I have an option of either going with a path related to neuropharmacology (arguably a bit easier, more interesting, and drugs are cool), or computational neuroscience (I have no idea how to code but I have an option of getting onto an introductory python course, which would allow me a smooth transition into computational neuroscience in year 3). I feel like while computational neuroscience is all vibrant and interesting, and sounds like there might be a pot of gold waiting there somewhere, to be completely honest I started studying neuroscience because of the pharmacology in the first place. But, as I'm first year, I still have no idea what I'm doing overall. I want to be smart about my decisions and balance fun and interest with securing my future well. Please all advice is really welcome, it's only a few days until I have to finalise my decision! Cheers Submitted April 30, 2023 at 11:40PM by moodarrhythmia via reddit https://ift.tt/5XH0y4t

I'm writing about Dahmer and I want some more background content on police ignoring Black and Asian victims. Submitted April 30, 2023 at 10:06PM by Smart_Hovercraft_142 via reddit https://ift.tt/x8XAcdQ

The Problem with Open Access

I've been offered a teaching assistant position but no tuition waiver or health insurance!
Hi. I'm from a third world country with a sort of rural background. I have been offered an admission to a graduate school in the US with a teaching assistantship position but will have to pay the tuition of a little over 2k per semester myself. I'll be paid 20k annually with "approximately 20 hours of work per week". I don't have other schools to choose from as it is rare to get an admission offer in the first place. That being said, if I were to manage paying my fee for the first semester, is it possible to be able to survive without struggling on what they're offering, while also saving for the next semester's tuition? I'm trying to research the cost of living and other things, but I'm still not very well aware of how things work in the state of New Mexico. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated! Thank you. The academic career path
I'd like some help deciding whether the adademic route is for me. I'm currently a PhD student in applied maths / neuroscience, and I finish in 4 months so I've been thinking about post-PhD... Essentially, I'd like to know whether you need a consistent and well-planned research program to be successful in academic science? I've realised I love research. I love having lots to read; I love using maths to learn about the world; I love hearing about my colleagues work; I even love feeling confused about what I'm doing most of the time. I want to research, but I'm not sure if industry would suit me better. Sure, adademia has plenty of downfalls, but there's something that turns me off which may be a red flag (or it may not, I'm not sure). In my experience, researchers are valued more by universities when they have a collection of works that showcase their research direction. An academic paper trail showing how they're carving out their niche that will one day get them a professorship. I don't like this because I don't really want to be confined to a narrow research track. I get bored easily, so I'd like to work on different projects using different skills and knowledge. Even my PhD is mixture of different projects. For example, after my neuroscience PhD I would happily consider going to work in multiple areas of physics research. Does anyone know if bouncing around lots of different subjects can be a beneficial way to build up an academic CV? Underlying my research would be applied maths, so maybe that's enough of a link?
