Quick summary
I worked in tech for 20 years as a product designer at well-known companies. Spoke at conferences, wrote stuff, made products people have used, had a great time. But my biggest passion is teaching, lecturing, and mentoring. I'll be making a move into academia and I'm curious to know if anyone has any thoughts. Thanks!
More details (not necessary, just for the curious)
I founded a design bootcamp company for about 10 years, taught at an art school, and absolutely thrive when I'm mentoring and teaching. I love to learn new things, write about what I learned, and then teach to others. There's no doubt in my mind that my end goal is getting into teaching and staying there (money allowing).
Funny wrinkle: I don't have a bachelor's degree, which is going to be trouble if I want to get into the higher levels of academia one day. So step one is getting my Master's (I can jump from my not-bachelor's to Masters because of my work experience) which I'm really excited about. Then, while doing that, I'm going to pick up as much guest lecturing/lecturing opportunities as possible.
When I talk to people at my University, they start by saying "with your experience, why bother with a master's" but when I say I don't have a bachelors yet want to be a professor, most of them (including the dean and head of design school) end up agreeing "yeah starting with the master's is a smart idea."
I know next-to-nothing about academia, but I've been doing a ton of research and this is part of that process. Would love to hear any insights about my situation and how a transition like this might go. Thanks!
