Is this common in academia promotion?
I received a letter from my school's leadership saying that my supervisor is being considered for a promotion (the supervisor already has tenure; this is promotion to higher leadership positions within the university) and asked if I could discuss my experiences working with this person. I am a grad student. Is this common to ask students or is there something likely going on? Submitted October 31, 2020 at 11:22PM by Pitaziki via reddit https://ift.tt/3kMV67Q
SO inside Academia or not?
Does your significant other work in academia or not? Do you consider this similarity or different occupations an asset? Why or why not? (Mine is not in academia, a new career for me btw, and he really doesn’t understand what I do and why I chose this.) An open-access, open-source platform for scientific literature.
Hi everyone. I am currently working on a platform for open access to scientific research. This post is regarding the Idea, my motivation, challenges I am trying to address. I am looking for some community feedback as the entire ecosystem of the proposed platform relies on the academia community. Information like what challenges should we look ahead of us, the idea of such a platform having an open-repository of peer-reviewed literature is built on community collaboration would you support it, what else can we do differently from available services out there ...are essential to this project. Premise Currently, if anyone who requires to access any scientific peer-reviewed literature that person has to pay a high sum of money to a journal publishing corporation in order to access. On top of this like music and books, the actual author of that research material doesn't get any monetary sum from royalty or similar model. Hence we pay to the corporation for knowledge, and that goes to no use for the actual author. Large Universities pay millions of dollars in amount yearly as subscription fees to get access to research journals from major publishing corps like Elsevier, Springer, IEEE, etc. Open access idea The idea of open access is to make science and research open for anyone who wishes to access them. Currently, there are multiple platforms that provide open access to scientific materials some of which are peer-reviewed without any cost. Example https://doaj.org/, https://arxiv.org/ Limitation 1.These are also maintained by some organization(s) or institution(s).
Idea - The idea of this project is to address the above limitations and create an open-source platform for open access to peer-reviewed scientific literature. Where the community will be maintainers and users. Goals - Creating an open-source platform for open access to scientific literature - Allowing peer-review process within the ecosystem - Creating a standardized platform considering Intellectual property, following standardized guidelines like COPE, and importantly trust by the community. ___________ Initially, we are looking for a humble start for the development of the infrastructure of the platform, in an Iterative process and hoping to add features in turn by turn basis. Upon successful build-up of the basic system with happy flow functionalities, we hope to get more support from the open-source community itself and further ideas on a more robust system. Motivation: Open access to knowledge, and information___________ Please do share any feedback, any doubts regarding the project motivation, idea, etc as your feedbacks are essential to this project. Thanks in advance Submitted October 31, 2020 at 02:43PM by itsbadboy19 via reddit https://ift.tt/3jJTTNk

I shouldn't have got a PhD. I am not suitable for research in mechanical engineering. How should I proceed?
I shouldn't have got my PhD. I have published 4 papers in Q1 materials science journals. But that has been possible because the topic is hot right now and much rigor is not required for publishing. I can use an open source or commercial software without knowing how it works in detail and churn out papers. I am just pushing some buttons in a black box and getting results. For those in mechanical engineering, I am talking about finite element method. I never took a course on the topic as I thought my research is too specific, why should I waste time on truss, modal analysis and writing 1d-2d Matlab codes when I can work on my research. I self studied through an introductory FEA course but did not do the exercises. I can't teach anyone the numerical method behind the software or the mathematics involved because I never practiced it. Other students who work on this field take courses and have thorough understanding of the subject. They go on to teach the subject. While I am poor in mathematics, I am just dumb and lazy to self study it, solve examples. I am publishing papers now at a decent rate, but I am lacking depth. I am not suitable for my field of research. I don't know if I can do anything about it now. I recently got a PhD and searching for postdoc positions. I just don't fit anywhere. Everyone wants someone who is expert in the theory or have strong mathematics background. I have neither. I shouldn't have got my PhD. I think, my advisor, committee and university just wanted to get rid of me. Submitted October 31, 2020 at 12:25PM by And_Gate_4623 via reddit https://ift.tt/2TJD4XW
Any foreign postdocs in the US - what's the practical difference between H1-B and J1, particularly for grants?
Any foreign postdocs in the US - what's the practical difference between H1-B and J-1, particularly for grants? I understand one difference is that J-1's are expected to return, though in practice this requirement can vary substantially by home country. I have heard for applying for K-99's and other grants that is helpful for postdoctoral career advancement and transition to tenure track, J-1s can make it harder. Has anyone had experience in this? Black Market in the Soviet Union
Several years ago I remember hearing an audiobook or podcast where (if I recall correctly) reference was made to what one Soviet Union leader said about black markets--that they allowed the black market to exist in order to pacify the people so they wouldn't rise up and rebel. However, I have no idea where it might have been, who might have said it, and if it's even a real source. I'm writing an academic paper on the black market in Cuba and North Korea and my thesis rests somewhat on this premise. Has anyone ever heard this (about the Soviet Union or any other communist society) and if so, have a source for it?
