Email exchange with search committee chair
I applied for a TT position at an R1 with an application due date of Nov 1st. Against my better judgement, I emailed the search committee chair about timeline for application review. He emailed back "Thank you for being in touch about the position. Since the position just closed on 11/1, we had to account for the Thanksgiving holiday in our review process. We are making decisions and applicants should expect to hear something in the 1-2 weeks." I followed up with a thank you and have a good day and he replied "You are welcome! You too." I know I am reading into the exchange, but I feel like that's a good sign? Submitted November 29, 2017 at 07:51PM by pregbmore via reddit http://ift.tt/2imcHsp

Professor/class evaluations! If you're friends with a professor, do you rate them fairly and truthfully or not? What if they were a mess?
So survey evaluations are up for the semester and we have to fill them out in order to get extra credit and if we want to see our grades as soon as they're posted. To those that don't know, the evaluations are basically your feedback towards the class and the professor. The professors get to read these but I'm pretty sure they're anonymous. Anyway if you're friends with a professor but they did a horrible job this semester, would you be honest on the evaluation or BS it? First faculty interview, advice greatly appreciated
In a little over a week I'm going to interview at an R1 for a tenure track position in engineering. It's my first and so far only response to any of my applications this round. For people who have been through this before, is there anything you wish you had known before your first interview? Any advice, whether it's about the job talk or the faculty meetings or anything else would be greatly appreicated. Submitted November 26, 2017 at 09:58PM by kscholten via reddit http://ift.tt/2iSUC24
Dropping out of Taught Master's and starting PhD
Hello /r/academia, I'm currently a student from the UK and I have recently started a taught MSc program in the field of data science (machine learning, data mining, ... e.t.c) at a university different to my undergrad. My intention is to eventually get onto a Ph.D. and start doing research. I am a very self-motivated individual and can easily handle independent research. This is demonstrated by the fact that I got 80%+ for my undergraduate dissertation and 70%+ (UK First Class). The problem with my current master's is that I'm finding myself repeating some of the work that I have already done along with work that is genuinely challenging and would be of no use for my future research! In addition to this, we have to take a compulsory module telling us how to make a good poster, how to find a supervisor, how to use academic English e.t.c. To me I find this damn right insulting considering I have won awards for academic excellence in my dissertation. I feel almost embarrassed to be around students who are taking research masters as it feels like they are being taken more seriously then what I am. I'm seriously on the verge quitting and jumping into a PhD. Please, could you lend me some advice. What do I do? I'm living off family at the moment as there is no additional funding related to my work. Do I keep at it until September 2018? I'm fed up of all this taught content and no application! Changing research topic; Master's by Research
Hello! I'm in a Master's by Research program where our research work is essentially a continuation of our professor's. They have a tie up with a particular company, so the projects are all based on their data and revolves around concepts in that domain. I had chosen one based on the topic and the advisor- he is the most helpful and understanding professor from what others have told me. We then got a visiting prof (for 1 year) and he suggested that I join his team that is working on an excellent topic; he's ready to speak to the admin and other profs to make it happen. Should I change it now? If I do, I'd lose 2 months of work and probably a good rapport with my prof, which could affect my overall grades. If I don't, I lose a good opportunity and am stuck with a topic that doesn't interest me as much. Thanks. Edit: If this helps, the topics are: Current: Knowledge Representation centred New: Deep learning centred Submitted November 24, 2017 at 10:54AM by mo_op via reddit http://ift.tt/2jiQJCU
