Manuscript Reader Etiquette: Are Gifts Appropriate?
I recently emailed another expert in my field and asked for them to advise/be a second reader for a manuscript. I have had no previous contact with this person so I didn't have high hopes they they would respond or be willing to help. However, this person responded with excellent comments and advice. I am grateful that they decided to take me (a junior scholar) under their wing. I was thinking of sending some sort of gift card via email as a token of appreciation, but I'm not sure if this is appropriate etiquette. A few questions:
TIA for any advice or insight. Submitted April 01, 2022 at 06:13AM by DanieDangerTM via reddit https://ift.tt/7jYu49n
Leaving academia for technical sales specialist role? (UK)
Hi all, My life is at a fork in the road right now, so I'd like some of your perspectives. I completed a PhD and did two years of post-doc in a protein biology/microbiological field. I've decided that I have achieved what I wanted to achieve, and that it is time to leave academia. Subsequently, I applied to senior scientist roles at well-known Biotech and Pharmaceutical companies, and already have an offer from one of them. Earlier this week, however, I received a recruitment call for a technical sales 'specialist' role for a company that provides consumables and kits for protein-related research. Although it's a role I've never thought about for my future career, I thought "Let's see where this goes", and said that I'd be interested in talking to the company's manager in an informal interview. Now, keep in mind that the manager I spoke to was once a successful sales person too, so you'd expect him to sell the role well - and my god he did. Good OTE salary; opportunity to travel; opportunity to meet lots of new people; solving problems for scientists in industry and academia; potential to help acquire new technologies and products. It all sounded quite exciting to me. However, not only is it a lateral jump in career path, but I also have no idea what being in sales would be like. For all I know it could be an extremely toxic and competitive line of work (sound familiar?), and I would have left science for all the wrong reasons. In other words, I have absolutely no reference to judge this with, and I'd like some of your insights and opinions. Thank you in advance! Overconfidence is generally studied in 3 distinct ways - overestimation, overplacement, and overprecision. These three forms arise under different conditions and have different consequences.

Academic Dishonesty Speed-run? What is the fastest way to tarnish my transcript?
Hello! I’m new to the community, but I wanted to ask how fast I could get a symbol for academic dishonesty on my transcript? I tried plagiarizing all of my research from my professors and monetizing it, but all they do is flunk me. I have a few semesters of scholarship yet, so I’m thinking removing those scholarships is the first step. Speed-run tips? Hacks? Penn's punitive actions against Mackenzie Fierceton
Does anyone have thoughts on the recent New Yorker article about Penn withholding Mackenzie Fierceton's degree? It seems like a pretty shocking instance of retaliation against a student for testifying in a lawsuit against the university, but I would be curious to hear what everyone else thinks. Equivalence testing in biomedical science
I've noticed that equivalence testing (i.e. TOST or confidence intervals falling within equivalence bounds) aren't really used in biological or biomedical research. I was wondering if anyone can shed light on why? Is it because biological assays with only a few repeats don't give enough statistical power for these tests? Is it just not particularly known in the field? Many thanks! Submitted March 31, 2022 at 12:30PM by throwaway8374939292 via reddit https://ift.tt/7bKPy1Y

Question about plagiarism
I am writing a paper for a class and have written a paper about the exact same topic before. I want to utilize the same research papers and portions of those paper as I have before, but don’t want to accidentally self plagiarize. Is it acceptable to utilize those sources and portions as long as I rewrite the surrounding portions of the paper?
