I just started my graduate studies, and am curious about the best ways to look for sources of income during the summer. I am on a TAship with a 9-month stipend, but it just isn't quite enough to get me through the other 3 months of a year (unless I moved in with my dad). I don't have savings.
I feel that in my industry (computer science), most companies don't want employees with advanced degrees. Therefore, there aren't a lot of graduate-level internships available. Those that exist are highly competitive and only at very large corporations. As this is my first year, I won't have much to put on those applications, so I'm not hopeful.
I'm also not sure how research grants tend to go. Would the grants with proposals due this spring offer funding for summer 2017, or just for summer 2018?
What is the best approach to surviving a summer?
