Please help me choose a collaboration group
I have a full time research job in physics right now. During my job search, I was accepted by other groups as well and these groups below agreed to collaborate in the future. I need to publish more papers and I have time to collaborate with one group along with my main job duty. However, I do not want to promise all groups and not be able to deliver my promise due to overload. So I am planning to commit only one group but I also want this to help me if I will not be able to continue in academia (You have to have a plan B, you never know what will happen). I had already done a minor of which already helps me with industry jobs. My long term goal is to continue academia. My PhD is in theoretical physics, my minor is in Computer science. Group A: They are superstars in our field. They are like publication machine, problems are very good and it is very relevant to my experience and if I am successful, their reference will be very valuable in academia. Cons are if academia does not work out for me, this experience means nothing for industry jobs. Group B: This group (person) is also brilliant, well known and it is relevant to my field. Problems are very similar to what I will be working. Cons are this group is rather small and I will work with only one person. Again it will not help me for industry experience if academia does not work out in the future. Group C: It is far to my research area but I have relevant skills. The reason they agreed to collaborate is, I had done a minor in CS during my PhD and the problems are very interesting. If I work with this group, I will not have any difficulty to transition for industry. Also if I continue on academia, it will be a very good variety in my CV. --------------------------- TL DR: I already have full time research job and I am planning to continue academia. PhD in physics, minor in CS. Group A: Big superstar group, will help me with academia tremendously, but no extra help with industry. Group B: Smaller group, same problems I will be working on, no help with industry. Group C: Completely different field, but very helpful with industry and it will be a very good variety in my CV if I continue academia. Thank you for your time. Pregnancy and visa renewal
Hi academics, This is a question pertaining my wife, she is a postdoc at a well known university in the USA on a J1 visa. My wife is 13 weeks pregnant with a due date of late December. Her J1 should be valid until 2022 but she was only funded until Feb 2019 and would need to be funded for another 3 years, so we can "renew" the J1 (in our passports it currently ends in 2019). I am in the same position but have been funded until 2022 and have my DS2019 in hand - so I am ready. My wife needs to talk to her principal investigator about continuing funding until 2022 (which was sort of a spoken agreement when she started but has not been discussed since), this was always assumed, but she has to just have that conversation as we need to renew soon-ish (we were advised to start 6-9 months before expiration). She has not yet disclosed her pregnancy at work. Would it be better for her to ask for the visa renewal (so basically for an updated DS2019) and once that has gone through to disclose about the pregnancy? Or should she disclose during the visa talk? I know legally she does not have to disclose yet, but we worry about damaging her relationship with a PI (who is already not the easiest to work with and who she spends a lot of time with, her PI is extremely hands on) who may feel she was misleading in regards to the funding. But we also worry about her damaging her relationship by springing both of these things at once. Additionally the PI is an MD, and she may suspect as my wife has been pretty ill with morning sickness but has not missed a single day (including weekends). What do you think? Any advice? Is there a clear "best" way to do this? Submitted June 27, 2018 at 08:05PM by Burritosiren via reddit https://ift.tt/2IvK4zV
Non-Profit Organization regarding education
Hi all! I am trying to create a Non-Profit Organization. It will be a project that takes place in numerous countries. We currently have members from Canada, America, Philippines, Colombia, and France. Our goal is to have independent projects from our own respective countries that focus on one goal: enhancing education in schools that are particularly lacking in quality. We are in need of passionate and dedicated members that can help us reach our goals. If you have any ideas or skills (web designing, web coding, financing, etc), please join our discord: https://discord.gg/6nu4vuX Thanks! Is it okay to ask the authors for code used in a research?
I am currently studying a paper about Assembly Line Balancing and Metaheuristics, and plan to replicate their results. right now I am stumped. Is it okay to email the authors of the original paper and ask for the code they used in their research? Submitted June 25, 2018 at 10:30AM by MrEntryLevel via reddit https://ift.tt/2to4GW3

What is the general understanding between a supervisor and a co-supervisor?
I’m a new PhD student, and I am not sure if there are any unwritten rules about whom to approach in case there is a problem or any other matter worth discussing. This includes things like publications, reports etc etc In my case, the co-supervisor is senior to my main supervisor. I just want to be mentally prepared regarding this before starting my PhD. Thanks in advance! :) Submitted June 23, 2018 at 02:40PM by sitwano via reddit https://ift.tt/2Mhdkwn
Unsolicited proof reading email
Hi all I got this Reddit message - seems a bit dodgy, but wanted to ask for opinions. I googled the email address; no hits. Has anyone else had anything like this? Seems some sort of scam? Submitted June 21, 2018 at 02:47PM by BlueChequeredShirt via reddit https://ift.tt/2loCUo1 |
