I was assigned this paper by the PI and research resident C and was told I would be first author. I have never written an medical article before so I was very overwhelmed after completing bulk of the data entry, tables so I had asked for help/break as I started my first unit in medical school and told that an MS3 would take over and share first authorship which I was okay with.
2 months later I check in with the other medical student and when I offered to help out with anything else since exams for unit 1 were done, he asks me to continue where I left off giving me an outline for the paper, based on meetings with the PI while I was away. The med student says he doesn’t mind that I can take over full first authorship unprompted. I wrote the draft and he edits. After sending the latest revised draft to the team, I get an email with an abstract of the paper with a new title and addition of another resident listed as first author, with the PI cc’d and the PI asks this new person to send it over to other co-editors to review. The deadline to submit the abstract to a medical conference is tomorrow. I send an email immediately asking the PI for an explanation.
Am I right to pursue first authorship? In the long term I would like to continue working with the PI but I’m apprehensive my efforts will be treated the same way…
