Crossposting from r/PhD. Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I kind of just want to know what your careers are like. Professors and advisors are always encouraging me to look at research as a career but I don’t know a whole lot about it. My basic understanding is that your jobs are mostly teaching and research projects. What I specifically wanted to know is the nature of research projects. I don’t know if this is true but it’s my understanding that professors/grad students will spend months to years working on the same very specific project(s), which is the major thing that bothers me about this career. I love the challenge of solving a puzzle and I am dedicated to a certain field, but I also jump from small idea to small idea in my head very quickly so I’m worried that I would not have the stamina for months-long projects. Is that a misconception about research? What is your day-to-day life like?
