Hi everyone,
I was wondering if someone can share their experience with changing a supervisor mid-way your PhD. I have completed one and a half year of PhD but I did not yet have my qualification exam yet so I did not achieve candidacy. My current research is great but my motivation for research topic changed and one of my previous professors from undergrad, who specializes in the new research topic I would like to pursue, is willing to take me in as his PhD student. So, I was wondering if you can share your experience. Some questions I would like answers to is how did you handle the situation with your original professor? How difficult was the transition? Did your original professor have an effect on the rest of the time you were finishing your PhD?
As a little more background of myself, I research in the fields of robotics. However, I realized in order to further my research I will need to specialize in wireless transceivers. My current supervisors are great at managing students but they never once helped me with the technical aspect of the research and my current knowledge of wireless transceivers are very limited. The new professor I may be working with specializes in wireless transceivers and has designed several ICs (tiny sensor chips) which I may be using or designing something completely new to add into the robots.
Thank you.
