What is the best journal article search engine?
I feel like Google Scholar is supposed to be the best but time and time again I'm noticing that even the slightest word differences alter the search results immensely and adding an extra keyword or removing it does it as well. So it is really hard to anticipate how to find an article in a given topic. What do you think? Are there better search engines? Upcoming skype interview for oversea research internship, what should I do?
Hi reddit! I'm an undergraduate doing medicine who is interested in pursuing a phd overseas in neuroscience. I have been looking for potential short term research electives overseas for some time now. And I came across a PI which does things that I'm very interested in. Coincidently, the PI has collaboration with my uni so it is possible for me to work on a project for a while here and bring the work over there for the elective. However since the time i'm available is just two months, so it would take some convincing for him to take me on for such a short time. We have scheduled a skype session on this coming friday to talk about this. I am also very interested in applying to the PI's uni or even apply to him specifically. If I can score this internship, It would help my application immensely. What do you guys suggest that I can do now? Should I read all of his papers? Or should I talk more on my current research project(computational neuroscience) but it is not related to his subfield(molecular neuroscience). Would he care if i'm doing something unrelated? In general, what should I talk about and how can I impress him? Submitted June 21, 2016 at 12:01PM by neurocrush via reddit http://ift.tt/28MFa3O

Is there a need to cite a general idea in the introduction which shall be later developed with a reference?
Say like you state in your introduction the following:
In the body of your work, you elaborate with citations:
Is it required to backup the introduction statement with the same citations? isn't it just a general statement? In case where the 'general statement' (which supposedly doesn't need citations) was inspired by the actual cited study, shouldn't I back it up even if written in a general form? Do I need/Will it be helpful to obtain disability documentation from my school?
Suppose I requested special accommodations from my school for example extra time. Then I go to another school for further studies. Is it common practice to obtain documentation of one's disability from one's previous school for example from the office of disability services? So that in the future if I were to request for accommodations I would have to/it would be helpful to present documentation of me having been granted accommodations before? Use of online resources for homework, and how to discuss with professors?
Hello! I'm an undergraduate student. Sometimes when I'm doing homework (science/math courses) I get to a question that is very different from any examples I've seen in class and I have no idea where to start with it. So I try Googling it so I can get a hint as to how to solve it. Which usually helps. But sometimes I am able to sort of copy the approach someone else took with different numbers, applying it to my numbers, getting the right answer... But I don't really understand the actual process I used to get the answer. So I want to ask my professor later more about it so I can understand. With online homework, especially, it's fairly easy for someone to just Google the answer and not really do the work honestly. Which we all know. But that means anyone in my class could theoretically be getting 100%s on the online homework without doing the work and my professor wouldn't know. So in a sense, I feel like I am cheating if I get a correct answer having to Google something to get there? Especially for those problems where I have to follow someone else's method step by step for my numbers? I definitely want to honestly learn. And I want to be honest. Especially because, if I'm not honest with how I do the homework and learn from it, I'm going to end up failing the exams anyway. Is there a good way to approach this issue with my professor? I don't want to make it seem like I'm cheating. How do professors feel about this sort of thing? Submitted June 19, 2016 at 07:44PM by hexaneandheels via reddit http://ift.tt/1PAWALz
Looking for the brutal truth. Is a 3-year Indian degree from a State Uni's external system valid for PG courses in NZ?
Hello all! I'm very much interested in Graduate study. I've been conducting some research on this and my problem is a unique one. I've graduated from an Indian State University. However, the program was offered via the University's external system, something akin to the University of London's International Programmes. I did attend classes, but they were directly at the University and not at an affiliated college. The setup here is that Universities and Colleges (in India), regardless of whether they're private or public grant degrees under the State University's guidance and authority. Certs don't even state which affiliated college the student studied under. It doesn't state whether the student was a full-time or a part-time student. It just has the University's seal along with the validation of the course the student studied for. My question is if whether my degree will be recognized by Universities/Colleges in NZ for post-graduate study. I know it's a long shot. However, sources such as the below link provide me with a glimmer of hope. I'm fully aware that this is completely under the discretion of the respective school in NZ and not the government authorities handling the education system. I would however, appreciate a broader/bigger picture answer. Am I doomed with regards to admissions? Thanks for your responses in advance—I hope the big brains of /r/academia don't mock me for this.
