I've heard about people in certain fields landing tenure-track jobs fresh out of grad school. Are there any disciplines or specializations where this routinely happens?
I'm a physics undergrad and have all but ruled out pursuing faculty jobs because I would have to do 2 or 3 postdocs just to be considered, and I'm told the odds of success are low even then. If any related STEM fields are so noncompetitive that people can land tenure-track jobs without a postdoc, I'd consider changing fields for my PhD.
