I just got offered a TA position at an upper-tier university in the USA. Currently in a grad program for languages. I plan on getting a PhD.
The TA position pays $2500/mo including some tuition remission. Requires "a grueling 20 hours a week" and I am required to remain a full-time student simultaneously to keep the TA position. If I accept, I lose my $500/mo scholarship. I plan to graduate this school year with my MA and a 3.85 GPA.
The TA pay doesn't seem to be worth jeopardizing the 3.85 GPA and the added time and stress - and if I need to drop a class to cope with the workload, I lose the position, and it will send a bad message to professors. Similarly, if I don't accept the position, I fear it will send a bad message to professors. I also fear not having time to complete a thesis during all this, and may unnecessarily add a year to my graduation timeline.
Since I plan on going for my PhD and becoming a professor one day, should I accept the TA position and added risks for the "teaching experience"? Or should I decline, and how can my declining best be smoothed over politically while remaining a promising 3.85 GPA PhD candidate?
