The same old private industry versus academia question, but with a COVID-19 twist.

Digesting and Synthesizing Research Articles
Hi all! I have a question about the preferences of the members here when it comes to digesting and synthesizing the information from research articles. I am a graduate student (studying physical therapy) with a heavy interest in research and evidence based medicine, so I enjoy diving into the literature frequently (and I also co-lead a student journal club). I sometimes (or often) like to venture into other areas of the literature and recently it has been a dive on note taking and retention strategies. A lot of what I have gathered revolved around strategies not being a useful as many thing (highlighting, writing directly on documents, etc - all of which I have been doing). So I have been trying to take a look at the way I take lecture notes, notes on reading for pleasure, and dedicated research information. My question is this, what is your preferred method of taking in and synthesizing material from academic literatur? Highlighting? Taking notes while reading? Anything else? I currently utilize my iPad and DEVONthink on my iPad and MacBook to highlight and take notes on the PDFs and keep everything organized. While the system seems to work, if anyone can point me in a better direction that will lead to even better retention and more actionable strategies I am happy to listen. Thanks in advance and I hope you all are doing well! Submitted July 01, 2020 at 04:28AM by Surberus3 via reddit https://ift.tt/2BtBynk
Academic publishers have had a good 355 years, but change is coming. Covid-19 shows that scientific journals need to open up.
Interesting look at the business behind journals and whether they'll actually be able to move away from paywalls: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-06-30/covid-19-shows-scientific-journals-like-elsevier-need-to-open-up Submitted July 01, 2020 at 04:29AM by DoTheResearch0 via reddit https://ift.tt/3eQ0RhR
Gaming laptops and professional look
What do academics think about gaming laptops? I'm not talking about over the top rainbow lights everywhere, but red or green accents or key outlines that pretty obviously identify the laptop as a gaming one. The general feel I get on the internet is yes, they look unprofessional. But I've also met engineering faculty who say gaming laptops are the norm because you need something powerful to run models. Fall Job Market
Hi everyone I know there are lots of uncertainties regarding the fall, but I was wondering what do you all see the job market being like? Obviously, it will be bad... However, I will be graduating soon and my advisors want me to start looking for jobs. I am a doc. candidate in education. Should I try my luck? Should I wait? Could I collaborate with a professor who doesnt work at my uni??
So basically I'm an undergraduate student interested in doing research and possibly publishing something before I graduate. The issue is I feel like I need guidance through this and my professors arent being of much help right now. Would it be possible to meet a professor online who goes to another uni, and perhaps if things go well we could publish something together with both our names on it? Academics whine too fucking much
I burned out as a junior STEM academic, joined the Army, then returned to academia. My wife just started her faculty position in political theory. Vibe seems the same across disciplines. To the the burned out, butthurt academics who shake their fists at the establishment and think leaving academia is the end of the world: you willingly withhold some blessed truths that allow you to stew in self pity. First, we chose this life. Second we have so many more job opportunities outside of academia. Many academic fields have an industry equivalent. If not, the smallest modicum of people skills and initiative should land a decent white collar job. Now some might respond with some flavor of "leaving academia means throwing away years of my life" It is insanely conceited to think staying in academia is any different. Best we can wish for is a high impact journal/publisher to accept our manuscripts, or maybe an interview! Then we, as a bunch of siloed academics, pat each other on the back while nobody outside of our field cares. Much of our work is piss in the wind, and we are paid to continue pissing. I write this because I was a classic woe-is-me junior academic who left and joined the Army to find myself. I met countless hardworking people with hearts of gold who were unemployable, with large ailing families to support, who grew up in the projects and had AIDS-stricken siblings killed by cops (can you tell I'm in the States). Rather than stew in the unfairness of it all, they accepted their lot and recognized insurmountable misfortune is not the exception, it is the norm. Looking back to basic training, I recall screaming up and down the barracks at 3am every morning as I donned my shoes in pure existential despair, numb to the 20 hour day ahead of me. They'd bring us out to do sprints and pushups until the sun came up. Then we'd don 50lb packs and ruck until our ankles split open and blood oozed through our boots. Then the Georgia sun would overheat us to the point of vomiting. It was torture. The drill sergeant's response? "you fucking volunteered for this, embrace the suck" Searing that message into my mind has made me so much happier with life. I think that message can easily apply to rejected papers and grant applications. But this isn't just about venting. Investing myself in a life outside of academia (in the reserves now) saved my career. I really encourage everybody to pick up a hobby or side hustle that makes you bust your ass; ideally with people outside of academia. Vigorous exercise, charity work, archery... fucking breeding show-lizards. Devote yourself to it. It recalibrates your optics and makes you realize that fighting for grants and grinding away at publications is a great and cushy privilege. Latin Americans who study and work in European or North American universities, what are the differences that you like and dislike the most between your universities and those of Europe?
I'm just curious, and in this subreddit it is rare to talk about the crossing between these two so different worlds. I imagine that there are more advantages than disadvantages, but who knows what are the perceptions of those who lived in both spaces. :) Submitted June 30, 2020 at 01:15AM by sadblackbird via reddit https://ift.tt/2CUdzhF |
