How to have 'that' conversation
How do you have that conversation with a colleague who is habitually late to scheduled events when you are the TA and they are the ... professor of the course? This is my second year TA'ing for a prof who is habitually five to ten minutes late to class. I have never started a class or lab on time with him and its embarrassing. I feel his tardiness makes me look unprofessional. To make matters worse, he is on my committee. Nice. Is there any way to tell him to show up on time? What would you do in my case?
I manage to get into a chemistry class that I need to take in order to transfer but this class has an unusual meet ups in which in stead of 2 times per week, it’s 4 times a week. It takes 60 miles per day to get to that campus and back home which equals to 240 miles per week. What makes this situation worse is that this teacher has a heavy accent that I’m finding it hard to understand her. I don’t know if I should just stick with it or drop the class before September 9th since that’s the last day to drop with a refund. —I’m also taking trigonometry and have yet to see this teacher so I have to wait to see how good of an instructor that person is. Short version: should I stick with my chemistry class and drive 240 per week just to be taught by a teacher that’s difficult to understand while taking trigonometry or drop the chemistry class and hope to get a teacher the following year that would be an better instructor? I do not know if I have a disability but
I still go to college and try my best to pass the course even if it's difficult. If I do have disability I would feel let out cause everyone would seem better than me on what I do. If I do not have disability then would be huge waste of time trying diagnose me. I think got disability cause my writing is horrible. Talking to advisors about feedback tone
I’m a PhD student with fairly severe anxiety problems and the way my supervisor provides feedback on my work is well meaning, but entirely unhelpful. I end up wasting enormous amounts of time either A) editing their comments to be less agitated/exclamation mark filled so I can then work through the edits productively, or else B) having to take breaks to dig myself out of an anxiety pit every few comments as I try to edit I understand I have a lot to work on and that the quality of my work frustrates them at times, but I end up working far too slowly when in this situation, which is just frustrating for everyone. Constructive criticism is welcome but I need them to deliver it differently. Does anyone have any experience or advice about asking advisors/supervisors to adjust the tone of their feedback? Going from lawyer to scientist: any advice?!
So, I have a ton of loans from law school and just landed a decent gig at a small firm (pay's okay, work is meaningful). Needless to say, lawyering does/will take up a lot of my time. Yet, I find myself at night dreaming of being a scientist (particularly fascinated by physics, metaphysics, the universe/cosmos etc.). The only problem? I know very little about physics. In high school I never took physics or even calculus or pre-calc. In college, I somehow made it through accelerated calc (was very hard to learn so quickly), chem, o'chem, and worked in 3 science labs (stem cell, adaptive radiation, and site-directed mutagenesis of bacteria). I suppose a large passion of mine has been biology/anatomy which I have a decent understanding of. I know some chem/o'chem. But to me, I wish I would have learned more physics/math. Perhaps a large part of it is that my parents (esp my mom) had sexist views about women in science and esp. math, and it meant I never did much of it growing up (even though I was good at math when I did assert myself). How do I go about learning? Is there anywhere I can start learning the basics online for free (like intro classes into physics?). From there, once I have a primer, I might apply to a local college to take courses at night (while still working to pay off loans). I want to ease into it all. Thanks! Transferring graduate schools
I’m looking to transfer masters programs (geology) after the completion of the fall 2018 semester. Hence I’d begin at said new school spring 2019. I’m looking to go to Texas Tech, University of Texas, TAMU, Penn State, TCU, Tennessee or Alabama. If possible, how soon do I apply and what GPA will I need? I currently go to FAU if applicable.
