I'm conflicted. I joined a project with a colleague who is much my senior as I am only a student and they have a position at the department. My job was to assist him gather data. However I ended up gathering all the data. I then asked if I could assist in writing. I ended up writing my half and he promised to write his half but months later nothing is happening. The head of research is sending me emails asking for status and I have been deflecting them every time waiting for my colleague to answer them. However they are growing impatient and want results and are sending me private mails asking what the status is. My colleague is not answering my messages about status. I feel like I am betraying him by going to head and telling it like it is, also I feel I'm punching quite upwards which is a risky career move. I think of this colleague as a friend and I cherish him as a person and have accepted that I will be doing almost the entire project to further his career as he will be writer 1. However now Im out of options if he doesn't answer me within the next few days as I need to give a status update. What would you do and how would you put it?
