I'm a nearly-minted PhD––graduating Spring 2016––so I'm applying to jobs far and wide. One of my professors that enthusiastically agreed about 2 months ago to write a recommendation letter has been completely unresponsive despite my repeatedly emailing him/her to ask him/her to upload it to my dossier. My emails have been typical for a PhD student writing to a faculty member – falling over myself thanking him/her for their time and support; noting the unrecognized academic labor of letter-writing; offering pleasantries and asking about their well-being to make sure I'm not just impolitely demanding his/her time.
After two months of silence and a letter that is still pending I'm wondering if this isn't his/her twisted way of withdrawing his/her support. I don't have another close faculty member to ask to write in lieu of him/her – he/she is the last of a handful and all the others have been responsive.
I live hundreds of miles away, so stopping into the department for a face-to-face isn't an option; and writing to the department head seems inappropriate, but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. Should I just seek out another recommender? Anyone else had this experience as recommender or recommendee?
