dissertation signature page ≠ petition?
what's the difference between these two? It seems like some folks sign petitions without reading them. They really should. It also seems like some people sign dissertations without reading them, which they also should. What's the difference? Normal that students complete class evaluations for tenured faculty only once every 3 years?
Grad student here. I wanted to give anonymous feedback about one of my professors this semester, but this class did not show up on the evaluation site. When I inquired about why, I was told "Tenured faculty are evaluated every 3 years, and this year is not that professor's year to be evaluated." While I understand that a full review and evaluation by the Dean is not necessary every semester, it seems crazy that students are only able to give feedback to the college about the professor every 3 years. Am I crazy or is this policy crazy? Submitted November 28, 2018 at 05:04PM by roses923 via reddit https://ift.tt/2DZ1AP2
Peer review and the death of individual writing style.
Hello there. This is the first time I am posting here, so I would really appreciate your thoughts regarding my problem. I recently found myself in the following predicament. Six months ago I participated in a conference organized in the framework of a project I am working at. The proceedings of the conference would be published in an edited volume, so my boss and conference organizer asked us to write the final articles before the conference so that they would be pre-circulated among the participants. I submitted my article before the deadline expired. My boss praised it, said it was brilliantly written (sic) and it would make a major contribution to our project. She made some minor corrections here and there, asked me to polish the conclusions and that was it. I sent it back to her and everything was fine. During the conference, my article (and presentation) received excellent feedback. My boss approached me and told me it was one of the two most successful papers and that everyone loved it. Afterwards, I discussed with the moderator of my panel, asking him whether he has any suggestions to make the paper better for publication. He said there was no need to change a single word because the article was perfect and ready for publication (sic). I laid back and rested on my laurels, thinking that I had done a good job. I was very proud of my work and research, and I felt satisfied that it was so well received by my boss and colleagues. Fast forward six months. My boss asks me if she can teach my article in one of her courses. I gladly agree. Then one day after the class she sends me a lengthy e-mail, saying that after re-reading the article for the course and discussing with her TA (a colleague of mine), she decided that I should make some changes that might seem radical (sic). Basically, she was asking me to make extensive changes, delete certain parts, condense others and elaborate more on methodological and technical aspects. She asked me to delete my introductory paragraph, which was based on a light anecdote, and start the article right away with the topic and methodology. And she also wants me to delete most of my footnotes. I am still in shock after reading her comments. The changes she wants me to make are so extensive, both in a matter of content, length and writing style, that after that I don't feel like the paper will be mine. In addition, I am shocked because I believed that I had an article that was flawless and ready for publication (according to her words), and now I find out that my work is a pile of crap that needs to be more or less re-written. I thought I was done and was moving on to new projects, but now I have to go back to a text I wrote 6 months ago. And the worst of all, I don't believe in the changes she is suggesting, I don't understand what is exactly the problem. I feel like she wants me to write like her, but I am not her, I have my own personal style and method. To sum up, I don't know what to do. I don't know to what extent I can support my case and defend myself, especially when it comes to my boss and not an anonymous peer-reviewer. I feel completely helpless and at loss for words. It's a different thing to write something and receive bad feedback, and a different thing to write something that is "universally" praised, only to be told half a year later that it sucks. This development has completely crushed my confidence and made me seriously depressed. I feel completely frozen and in denial. I apologize for the lengthy sheet. Any word of advice would be very much welcome. TL;DR: I wrote an article that my boss and other reviewers considered to be excellent and ready for publication. Then 6 months later my boss decides that I have to make "radical changes" to make it better. Submitted November 28, 2018 at 04:15PM by lafidaninfa via reddit https://ift.tt/2razpnR
How to approach a university/professor for a research internship without prior contact?
Hi, I'm currently searching internships and I am would like to do a research internship at some universities where I am not enrolled in since I find their projects more interesting. However, I'm not sure that this is something that is done... I assume that these institutions are more likely to hire their own students and I don't think that there are established schemes between them and the university where I attend. Does anyone have any experience with this? If it's possible then how should I approach them? Submitted November 28, 2018 at 04:57PM by RhinoFish via reddit https://ift.tt/2FJ4iKl
Resources for impact of female stars on women?
I was looking for resources on the topic of female film stars in old Hollywood and their impact on everyday women. It could be how they influenced them to work or their influence during wartime.
